Breeding restricktions

A breeding restriction entails that the dog must fulfill a number of conditions in order to be used for breeding purposes. If the conditions are not fulfilled – for male as well as female – the puppies cannot be pedigreed.

Some restrictions include testing the dog for various hereditary disorders.

Another restriction is that the dog must fulfill a so-called conformation requirement to ensure that the dog, in its appearance, is a good representative of the breed. This requirement is fulfilled in two ways. Either the dog must be evaluated by a judge at an FCI-recognised dog show. In that case it must have obtained the quality rating ’very good’. Or the dog must be found suitable for breeding by an evaluator at a so-called ‘fit-for-breeding test’ (FFB).

The Danish Kennel Club (DKK) only recognises HD grades obtained in countries who have confirmed in writing that they follow the FCI’s so-called HD protocol (ie. regulations for position on the bed such that knee and hip joints are included in the x-ray), and who apply the FCI’s 5-category scale, A, B, C, D and E. A list of these countries is found on the DKK’s website at ‘Avl/Opdræt’ (only in Danish).

Please note that a breeding restriction must be fulfilled prior to breeding.
